Summer crop sowing crosses 69 lakh hectares in India

As the agricultural summer season started in 2026, according to the recent statistics released by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the coverage of the area under the Zaid (summer) crop in India has grown tremendously. Total hectares sown is now over 69 lakh as of April 17, 2026. It reflects the increased importance of this short-duration crop growing period in terms of food security and farmers' income. 

National Sowing Overview: Breaking Down the 69 Lakh Hectares

The latest progress report on summer crop sowing showed that it is a gradual increase of 69.06 lakh hectares compared to the 66 lakh hectares registered during the same period last year. It is an increase of approx 4.4%, which indicates a strong urge to use the time between the Rabi harvest and the Kharif sowing season. 

Bifurcation of Sown Area: Crop-Wise Statistics

• Paddy: Paddy (rice) has been grown on 30.64 lakh hectares. Though it covers the greatest area sown, it registered a marginal decline of about 7.6% as compared to the 32.31 lakh hectares of the preceding year.
• Pulses: A significant development of this season is the increase in the sown area of pulses to 15.47 lakh hectares (as compared to 13.49 lakh hectares). In this category, Moong (Green Gram) has the largest area of 11.73 lakh hectares, then Urad (Black Gram) with an area of 3.45 lakh hectares.
• Oilseeds: In this sector, there has been an impressive increase of 19.5% to reach 9.14 lakh hectares. Groundnut is the major oilseed, with a total area of 5.51 lakh hectares, indicating an impressive 31% growth.
• Shree Anna & Coarse Cereals: Coarse cereals such as Maize, Jowar and Bajra have been planted on an area of 13.81 lakh hectares as compared to 12.70 lakh hectares last year. 

Strategic Significance of the Summer Season

This period of the year (Zaid) is essential since it makes use of the 90 days (March-June) which would be left fallow. The government is encouraging farmers to use their lands to the fullest by growing crops that use less water, such as moong and groundnut and improving the soil with nitrogen before the monsoon season strikes.
